Leads Spain to victory over Bulgaria with a brace

Spain eased past Bulgaria with a convincing 3-0 win. Luis de la Fuente’s side created numerous chances in the first half but only broke the deadlock right before halftime. Mikel Merino once again made his presence felt with a stellar performance, scoring twice and demanding more prominence within La Roja.

De la Fuente’s Spain remains unstoppable. Since March 2023, when they last lost an official match in Scotland, the team hasn’t suffered a single defeat. In that time, Spain has won a UEFA Nations League, finished as runners-up in the following edition after a dramatic penalty shootout, and lifted the most recent European Championship. Playing at this level, Spain looks ready to go far in North America. Their ticket to the 2026 World Cup is nearly secured — one more game should make it official. But for football fans, there’s no doubt: this team will be one of the strongest contenders next summer.

Against Bulgaria, Spain were rarely troubled. It took them time to break through, but once they did, there was no looking back. Pedri was once again at the heart of everything. The Barcelona playmaker, already dreaming of 2026, continues to prove he’ll be one of Spain’s brightest stars. He came close twice in the first half — one shot hitting the post and another missing by inches. If he stays healthy, it’s only a matter of time before he’s in the Ballon d’Or conversation.

Merino, Spain’s Silent Leader

He may not have Pedri’s elegance, but Mikel Merino might just be more decisive. The Arsenal midfielder continues to deliver for Spain, both with goals and leadership. Though he isn’t always a regular starter for the Gunners, he has become a key figure under De la Fuente, performing with consistency and maturity.

With performances like this, Merino has more than earned his place in Spain’s World Cup squad — and perhaps, in its starting XI.
